24                     Prominent Poets







            Poets have often been described as people who step outside the bounds of the obvious
            and produce aesthetic and in some cases, even rhythmic works that the meant to take
            the reader on a fanciful journey through the poet’s words.

            Name these famous poets.

                                         He is best known, as his anglicised name Homer, is the author of the Iliad
                                         and the Odyssey. He was believed by the ancient Greeks to have been the
                                         first and greatest of the epic poets. Author of the first known literature of
                                         Europe, he had a lasting effect on the Western canon. Whether and when
                                         he  lived  is  unknown.  Herodotus  estimates  that  Homer  lived  400  years
                                         before his own time, which would place him at around 850 BCE.

                                         Half Welsh, Half Gujarati, she is an Indian poet, journalist and talented
                                         performer. Her poetry is best experienced live as she performs it through
                                         movement and dance. Her first set of poems, ‘Countries of the Body’ won
                                         the forward poetry prize for best first collection.

                                         She was an American poet well known for her unique style of writing that
                                         contains short lines, typical lack titles, slant rhymes and unconventional
                                         capitalization and punctuations. She wrote over eighteen hundred poems
                                         during her lifetime.

                                         He was born on 26 April, 1564. He is regarded as the greatest poet and
                                         playwright of all times. For his achievements, he was given the name of
                                         “Bard  of  Avon”.  He  was  called  as  the  England’s  National  Poet.  He  has
                                         written 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems and many other
                                         poems as well.
