45 Aquatic Animals
Aquatic animals are those animals that live in water. Those that live in
ponds, lakes and rivers are freshwater animals. The animals that live
in the ocean are called marine animals. Some aquatic animals breathe
oxygen from the water through their gills, while others go to the
surface to breathe air through their lungs.
Let’s know about some aquatic animals.
Turtles live in water. They have flippers that are
used for swimming. Turtles are fast swimmers.
They do not have teeth, but they have a strong
beak with a sharp edge to cut food.
Eels are elongated fish that have a snake-like
appearance. Their fins are fused to form one long
ribbon running along the length of the body. They
live in shallow oceans and burrow into the sand of
the ocean bed. Some species of eels live in
freshwater. Eels are eaten as food by humans.
Crabs are also known as ‘Spiders of the Sea.’ They live
on land as well as in all the oceans of the world and
especially in the tropical regions. They spend most of
their time in fresh water.
Dolphins are highly intelligent
aquatic mammals that belong to
the toothed whale family. They
eat squids, fish and seals. Some
dolphins live in fresh water and
are called river dolphins.
