In our fast-changing society, the
family structure is changing. The
standard of living has changed. In this
chapter, we will study the reasons of
displacement and migration.
Displacement

Sometimes, during the construction of bridges, dams and highways, land is
taken away from people. They are given land somewhere else. This is called

displacement. Sometimes, the government demolishes houses and
buildings built on unauthorised land. This is called demolition. People are
forced to move to new places and face social and economic challenges.

People take time to adjust in a new place. Sometimes, people are forced to
move to look for work and to get better
education.

Some people have transferable jobs. So, they
have to face difficulties in shifting their

household goods, arranging for a suitable house
and a school for their children in the new place.

Some people, like those working in the army, are
transferred to different cities or towns every few
years.

Migration

Shifting Household Goods
The movement of people from one place to
another with an intention to stay in the new place is called migration . The
people who migrate are called migrants .
