The Internet is the large group of millions of computers around the world that
are all connected to one another. These computers are connected by phone
lines, fiber optic lines, coaxial cable, satelites and wireless connections.
Based on a concept first published in 1967, ARPANET was developed under the
directions of the US Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). In 1969, the
idea became a modest reality with the interconnection of four university
computers. This became the basis of internet.
Since then, the small network has undergone a massive change. Being named
as internet, it has expanded so much in size that today it is a network of
networks. The number of computers connected to the internet has grown
exponentially, while the number of users has risen from a handful of computer
scientists to 1.5 billion consumers.
